"You moved to Wisconsin from where?"
When we reveal the answer is Colorado we create many perplexing looks leaving people scratching their heads. Always to follow is "Why?"
We are John and Deb Sherman and yes, we both grew up and love Colorado. Being high-school best friends, but never sweethearts back then, we shared a lot of dreams. Many years later, after all the twists and turns in the landscape of life, we have created a dream together.
After what we consider successfully raising four children, it was time to step out on our own as our kids cheered us on. We had (and keep creating) many visions of how our lives should be. Through many career changes, relocations, and countless other life altering events we were able to reflect on our passions. We knew we wanted to be gracious hosts and love to entertain. Creating aromas in the kitchen that spill out onto the dining room floor has always delighted both of us. The kitchen is a space that we both enjoy tremendously. Running a B&B became one of our visions, but the "how do we get there" was not in our sights.
A seasonal joint job opportunity arose for both of us in Minnesota which originally brought us into the area. Keeping the dream of running a small bed & breakfast in our back pocket, we took the plunge and moved to Minnesota. Arriving to a world where stress was a dominant factor due to the nature of our jobs, we knew there had to be a better alternative. Frankly, it tainted the way we felt about Minnesota and we were anxious to possibly return to Colorado. We were laid off (intentionally) around Thanksgiving, 2006 and traveled to Panama (another one of our dreams) for about 4 months. Spending time in another country and experiencing a different lifestyle helps you refocus your own. Upon returning to work, we knew we couldn't prosper as healthy human beings if we continued our current employment in corporate America. Four weeks back at work was enough.
We took a leap of faith. With nothing lined up in the immediate future and an unheard of amount of free time on our hands, we had an entire summer to explore Minnesota and Wisconsin. Time after time we heard ourselves saying, "Wow..isn't this beautiful?!" Keeping our eye out for opportunity and dusting off our dream, we managed to find The Arbor Inn. We drove over the St Croix River into Prescott and were immediately in love with the town. To top it off, the inn was just what we were looking for. We walked in and immediately felt at home and hope our guests will feel the same.
So, enough about us! We look forward to meeting you and enjoying your story.
